Slithering out of a thick undergrowth of heavy 808s with serpentine elegance, Kelela croons “My lips are creeping up your neck.” As she curves and coils, her voice nestling softly in our ears, a sense of uncertainty surfaces: “you shiver and try to pull back.” In ‘The High’, we are exposed to the dark underside of desire, stung by substances that are at once chemical and amorous. The fragile balance between experimentation and addiction is innocently played with, like partners dancing on the precipice of love.
Produced by giftedandblessed, the depth of this collaboration is one to remember.
